As part of our ongoing operations in Ghana, we are seeking a qualified and experienced HEALTH & SAFETY OFFICER to join our underground operations team.

Role Summary: The developing & enforcing rigorous safety protocols for unique hazards (ventilation, ground control and managing high-risk environments through a combination of traditional onsite inspections and modern, data-driven safety technologies.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Performing regular underground site inspections to identify hazards, such as loose rocks or equipment malfunctions, and ensuring all activities adhere to national regulations like MSHA or local Mine Health and Safety Acts.
  • Ensure adequate inventory of required PPEs on the mine and track usage.
  • Developing and implementing Safe Operating Procedures (SOPs), conduct job hazard analyses (JHAs), and manage ground support compliance.
  • Upholding and managing a safe work environment, ensuring all personnel follow company safety rules, standard operating procedures (SOPs), and relevant legislation (e.g., MSHA or local equivalent).
  • Planning, organizing, and controlling daily development, production, and construction activities, ensuring they align with the mine plan while prioritizing safety.
  • Providing safety inductions, toolbox talks, and technical training to the workforce to ensure competency in high-risk tasks like blasting or operating heavy machinery.
  • Lead investigations into accidents or near-misses to identify root causes and recommend corrective actions to prevent recurrence. Ensuring the preservation of incident scenes as required by regulations.
  • Developing, coordinating, and testing emergency response plans, including evacuation procedures, to ensure preparedness for accidents or disasters.
  • Maintaining accurate records of inspections, incidents, compliance activities, shift activities, safety violations, training completion rates, and preparing regular reports for senior management and regulatory bodies.
  • Coordinating with maintenance to ensure all equipment is properly maintained, used safely, and inspected for functionality. 
  • Supervising the implementation of emergency plans, overseeing drills, and ensuring all personnel are trained in the use of self-rescuers and other life-saving equipment.

Requirements:

  • Strong understanding of mining operations, techniques, ground support rules, and all applicable health and safety legislation and regulations.
  • Bachelor’s degree in mining engineering, Occupational Health and Safety (OHS), or a related technical field is often required.
  • Between 3–5 years of practical underground mining experience, including time in lead hand or supervisory roles.
  • Strong leadership, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills to effectively convey safety instructions and reports to a diverse workforce and management.
