Our core services include raise boring, vertical and lateral underground development, contract mining, and shaft sinking. As part of our ongoing operations in Ghana, we are seeking a qualified and experienced BLASTMAN to join our underground operations team.
Role Summary: The Blastman will be responsible for the safe handling of explosives, preparation, charging, and firing of blasting rounds in underground mining operations, ensuring full compliance with company procedures, safety standards, and statutory mining regulations.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Reading and interpreting blast plans, instructions, and diagrams, as prepared by the mine planning engineer, to execute a blasting operation.
- Operating or directing the use of drilling machinery (like air-track or rotary drills) to create holes according to the determined pattern and depth.
- Safely handling, transporting, and storing explosives and accessories in accordance with strict regulations. This includes manually loading holes with pre-packaged or bulk explosives and assembling primer charges, detonators, and delay assemblies.
- Connecting electrical wires, detonating cords, or fuses and testing the circuits using galvanometers or multimeters to ensure they are complete and safe for detonation.
- Declaring the blast area safe, ensuring all personnel and equipment are clear of the blast radius, and detonating the charges.
- After detonation, inspecting the blast site for hazards such as misfires, loose rock (scaling), harmful fumes, and ensuring proper ventilation and re-entry procedures are followed.
- Preparing and maintaining accurate records and reports of explosive inventory, usage, blast patterns, and maintenance logs for equipment.
- Consistently adhering to all company, local, national, and statutory safety and environmental regulations.
Requirements:
- Valid Blastman Certificate of Competency
- Minimum of three (5) years’ underground mining experience
- Must be able to read and write in the English language.
- Strong knowledge of explosives handling, blasting techniques, and safety systems
- Physically fit and able to work in challenging mining environments.
- Excellent attention to detail and hazard awareness.
- Ability to work as part of a team and communicate effectively under pressure.
