As part of our ongoing operations in Ghana, we are seeking a qualified and experienced WINCH OPERATOR to join our underground operations team.

Role Summary: The Winch Operator will be responsible for safely and precisely operating winch systems to move personnel, equipment, and extracted materials within the mine shaft and underground areas, while adhering to strict safety protocols.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

• Controlling the movement of hoists/winches, levers, and pedals to regulate the speed and position of cages, skips (ore containers), railcars, or scraper scoops in response to various signals (bell, buzzer, radio).
• Adhering strictly to all company safety protocols and relevant mining regulations to prevent accidents and ensure a secure work environment.
• Conducting thorough pre-operational checks and routine maintenance on winch systems, cables, ropes, brakes, and other associated equipment (pumps, lubrication systems) to identify wear, damage, or defects.
• Ensuring loads are securely attached using appropriate rigging techniques and do not exceed maximum weight/dimension specifications.
• Communicating effectively via two-way radios, hand signals, or a telephone system with banksmen (surface workers) and onsetters (underground workers) to coordinate movements and ensure safe, efficient operations.
• Monitoring gauges, dials, and control panels for malfunctions or unsafe conditions and report any defects or incidents to supervisors immediately.
• Be proficient in executing emergency stop procedures and responding quickly to power failures or equipment malfunctions to secure loads and ensure personnel safety.
• Maintaining accurate and detailed logs of all operational activities, equipment maintenance, and safety inspections.  

Requirements:

• Previous experience in winch/hoist operation or a similar heavy equipment operator role, preferably within a mining or heavy industrial environment.
• Relevant industry-specific certifications in heavy equipment operation, rigging, and mine safety.
• Strong understanding of mechanical systems, hydraulics, and basic electrical principles relevant to winch machinery, including knowledge of load calculations and rigging techniques.
• Exceptional attention to detailand situational awareness.
• Strong problem-solvingabilities to address unexpected operational challenges.
• Effective communicationskills for coordinating with team members in a noisy environment.
